How Does CEREC Work?

Dental crowns are needed to restore teeth that have been damaged, chipped, or fractured beyond what a dental filling can repair. The process to complete a dental crown is quite involved as it’s custom designed to replace your damaged tooth, and before CEREC, it was also a very time-consuming process.

Your doctor would begin by taking impressions of your natural tooth and making a temporary crown to be worn while your permanent crown was being crafted at a dental laboratory. This first appointment was lengthy, and the impressions were often messy and uncomfortable for patients.

You would then have to wear your temporary crown for two to three weeks and then return to receive your permanent crown at another lengthy appointment. Temporary crowns could potentially break or fall out, which would mean additional appointments at the dental office. The whole process could take anywhere from two to four weeks from start to finish; however, all of that has changed with CEREC technology.

CEREC utilizes 3-D imaging to scan your natural tooth, so no messy impressions are needed. The image of your tooth is transferred directly to the CEREC machine, which then uses high-quality porcelain to mill your new crown in around one hour, while you wait. Dr. Jackson will then fit and seat your crown at that same appointment so you leave the same day with a durable restoration that naturally completes your smile.
